Literacy Survey

Survey Results

Reflection:
Google Docs and Spreadsheets is a great use of technology to efficiently administer a survey. I administered a survey on my blog through Google Docs and Spreadsheets. After the students took the survey, they submitted it. Through their submission, I was able to access the results. I surveyed my ‘at risk classroom’, Algebra Readiness. The results showed that students who read directions to Math problems, more often collected information when reading through a word problem for the first time. This shows me that students’ natural inclination is to read less dense information more often than dense instructions. This shows students in this Readiness class struggle with their lack of critical thinking skills. I also noticed that the students who do not read directions to math problems or critically read word problems the first time were less likely to say they had a favorite author or genre. This shows that students who do not enjoy reading also struggle with academic literacy in various subjects, such as Mathematics. As a future Math teacher, I plan to work with students’ academic literacy. I will introduce Mathematical literacy and model implementation as an instructor. I will teach students not to take instructions for granted. This survey has provided insight into the difficulties lack of academic literacy can develop. I believe students will perform better as academic well-round individuals.
